I'd like to have my child try a free class. How do I do that?

Why have art classes in a home?
As I am not paying for commercial rental space, the lessons are a great value to you. You are only paying for high quality materials and instruction.
Are art supplies are provided?
Yes, we provide all the art materials.
What should my student bring to class?
Nothing is required, but older clothes are recommended, especially for acrylic painting. Many students like to bring a water bottle, and in cooler months, a jacket is recommended.
What is the quality of the art supplies used?
We use high-end student grade materials and above. Paper stocks generally used are Strathmore 300 series Bristol and Canson 140 lb watercolor paper. Brushes have either Camel Hair or Golden Taklon bristles. Prismacolor colored pencils allow student to get exceptional coverage and blends. More experienced artists may use Windsor Newton gouache and Micron ink pens.
What types of media are used in the studio?
Younger artists use liquid watercolors, tempera paint, oil pastels, Sharpies, pencils (2H, 2B, 4B), markers, and chalk pastels. Occasionally there is a collage project or mixed media project. As students advance, they may progress to using liquid acrylic on canvas, gouache in Bristol paper, and Micron pens for ink drawings.
Why is the Artskiddoo studio located in a garage?
A garage is a place where a kid can be a kid. No one needs to worry about spills and messes. As we don’t pay for a brick & mortar location, we can pass these savings to you. The cost of the class is for high quality materials and instruction only.
Do you have a process/curriculum?

Our primary goal is for your student to love creating art, and give them confidence to continue creating it as they grow older. While we recognize most children won’t grow to become professional artist, it is our hope drawing and painting will become a life-long pastime.

Younger students start by creating directed projects using a simple grid system. As they advance, they allowed to choose a photo or illustration to duplicate using a more complex grid, or put a new spin on images in their areas of interest, and in their preferred media.

Rather than utilizing a formal art curriculum, Daniel Pink’s motivation formula of autonomy, mastery, and purpose is applied. By having more control and freedom, children are more motivated to continue. Practice is one of the best teachers allowing them to master what they enjoy. Each year we have the goal of submitting artwork to the San Diego Fair, giving them a purpose.

As kids enter middle school, I encourage them to create original images and have lessons to launch this creative thinking.
